GAIN Foresight July 1986

Description

Gay Association in Newfoundland monthly newsletter. The Gay Pride Weekend had been held that June, and the newsletter provides a review of events, including a rally in Bannerman Park, a dance at Grad House, and a fundraising benefit at Priscilla's Bar. It issues a call for people in the queer community to write for Foresight. It reports that Gay Fathers Coalition International seeking to start a chapter in NL; that a conference for gays and lesbians was being planned by the Education Committee from Gays and Lesbians of Moncton in Riverview, New Brunswick during Thanksgiving weekend. Notably, it reports that several AIDS groups would be meeting in Toronto at the end of July, and that Wally Upward from GAIN would be attending to represent the St. John's AIDS Information Committee. It includes other AIDS news: insurance companies were now asking if clients have been exposed to AIDS; the CDC in the US was considering adding AIDS to the list of diseases for which entry could be denied to the country; there were now more than 20,000 cases of AIDS in the US, 78% among gay and bisexual men; and there were 593 adult cases of AIDS in Canada. It also reports on legal cases relating to anti-gay discrimination in the U.S., the Netherlands, and New Zealand. It includes information about plays of interest that would be performed in St. John's in coming weeks, including The Fox by Allan Miller, adapted from D. H. Lawrence, showing at the LSPU Hall at the end of July; Torch Song Trilogy, a play by Harvey Fierstein, also showing at the Hall in August; and the musical Evita playing at the Arts and Culture Centre in late July and early August. It includes a review by Darl Wood of the novel Annie On My Mind by Nancy Garden, which was about a relationship developing between two women. Finally, it includes ads from gay men seeking housing and connections with other gay men; for a new gay bar, Earhart's, that would soon be opening in the space formerly occupied by Katz; for queer-friendly real estate agents; for queer-friendly accommodations in Montreal and Vancouver; and for queer organisations across the Maritimes.
