"Sodomy" entry in Inuktitut- English dictionary
Description
AnguniarneK and angutimut is translated to mean "sodomy." The real meaning of the words are unknown at this time.
The criminalization of queerness and eradication of gender diversity was essential to the colonial project on Turtle Island and in Inuit Nuunaagut. It was weaponized against the indigenous peoples of this land and homophobia and transphobia continues today as part of ongoing settler colonial violence. Prior to colonialism, two spirited identities were recognized in at least 150 indigenous cultures on Turtle Island. When European settlers arrived on these shores both the French and English colonial governments criminalized queerness through sodomy legislation.
