A MESSAGE FROM
HON. KEVIN WALSH
MAYOR
THE TOWN OF STEPHENVILLE
It gives me great pleasure indeed to welcome visitors to Stephenville on the occasion of the Stephenville Festival of the Arts.
This is the second year that the Festival has been operated and is now a much expanded and enlarged operation.
Being one of the few Festivals of the Arts in Canada, The Town of Stephenville is indeed privileged to have been
selected by Maxim Mazumdar and his board.
We know the Festival will be successful; and we trust that all who visit on this occasion will enjoy their stay and will return again next year.
STEPHENVILLE is a modern town havlng many modern facilities. We have many Service Club Organizations, Sports Clubs,
Recreational Centres, Gymnasiums, Shopping Centres, Churches, Parks. Natural Scenery, - and many more interesting things and places for happy and comfortable living and adventure and fun.
A marvellous blending of the old and the new settlers in the Bay St. George area has created a unique individuality in our people and has placed a stamp of distinctiveness upon our very
environment.
Nowhere else can you experience the same warmth of hos- pitality the colorful accent and speech mannerisms, the acute sense of humour, or the unique personality traits.
And nowhere else can you discover the same romantic rem· nants of centuries of history co-mingled harmoniously with modern commercial, industrial and social structures ln Institutions.
Bay St. George is indeed a study in contrasts, and it is this very duality of its character that makes it well loved by Newfoundland- ers and highly regarded by visitors.
WELCOME FRIENDS!

CAST
11lie world of the Ballet is a unique one. It is the most disciplined of the arts, requiring the emotions of· an actor, the sensitivity of a rrius- ician and the stam.ina of an athlete. No other art form lavishes such
adulation on its members or discards them with more ruthlessness. But all artists, even dancers, have one tliing in common - the human instinct for sur·vival. In INVITATION TO THE DANCE Jonathan Arden has to face this for the first time. lie is no longer the great star of· the ballet that lie was. l~lours before his farewell perf~ormance lie
sits in his dressing roorn brooding over the past. Two figures enact various characters in his life - his teachers, his family, his audiences; they are part of· liis Self Through them he relives his early triumphs,
as well as liis struggle with alcoliol and ill-health. Slowly through these memories lie picks up the threads of· the future and before the end of the play he encounters unexpected help from a visitor.
This play is a tribute to the art of the Ballet which I have grown to know and love ... and to all performers everywhere. It could never have been written or performed without the co-operation and help of the great English dancer, John Gilpin.
