An article in The Muse, Memorial University of Newfoundland’s student newspaper, reporting on St. John’s Gay Pride March in 1997. 50 people in the community gathered to celebrate the fight for queer freedom and to pressure the provincial government to amend the Human Rights Code. Two years prior, Labour Minister Kevin Aylward promised changes to protect the queer community from discrimination, but as of the Gay Pride March, the government had yet to enact any changes.
