Title

GAIN Foresight September 1987

Description

Gay Association in Newfoundland monthly newsletter. It announces dances at Priscilla's Bar throughout the fall; that the GAIN newsletter would be moving to a monthly format and was seeking volunteers to contribute; that GAIN was hoping to set up social and political committees within itself; and that GAIN would continue to operate a gay and lesbian support phone line. There are personal ads from two queer people seeking connections in St. John's and Labrador respectively, and a general call for queer-friendly apartments or accommodations. There are also ads for Canadian penpal club based in Montreal and the Gay Games in Vancouver. The newsletter includes a brief that The Body Politic has ceased publishing nationally and is being replaced by Epicene, and notes that two stories in the first three issues have focused on Newfoundlanders. It also includes an insert from EGALE on lobbying the federal government to introduce legislation against homophobia as part of the Canadian Human Rights Act, which provides a template for a letter to send to Prime Minister Brian Mulroney in both English and French. There are several news updates, including that a "Sexuality '88" conference was being held at the Health Sciences Centre; that changes were being made by the Canadian Armed Forces regarding queer people in the military, including an end to obligatory reporting of gay and lesbian employees, although queer people could continue to be excluded from the military based on "conduct and behaviour", which meant if they were not completely celibate; and that a monument had opened in Amsterdam for gay and lesbian victims of the Second World War. It also includes several AIDS updates, including that a symposium on AIDS was being held at the Health Sciences Centre in October; that GAN was organizing a fundraising dance at Grad House; and that AIDS numbers were increasing among women in Ontario. There is other world news from Russia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Yugoslavia, and Kenya.
